SnoCo Together: A Community Skills Fair

Event on March 31 in Everett brings together community members to learn

practical skills for making the most of the “New Normal”

 

(Everett, WA) The second annual celebration of SnoCo Together will “help people get local” by bringing together local experts, community members, and conservation groups for a one-day forum will teach practical skills for thriving in changing times and a challenging economy.

The event will feature a keynote presentation by David Korten, co-founder of YES! Magazine and author of Agenda for a New Economy, The Great Turning, and When Corporations Rule the World.

A wide range of local speakers will offer do-it-yourself workshops on growing and preserving food, reducing toxins in our homes and environments, and creating a connected and self-reliant Snohomish County community. The event features panel discussions, workshops, and art and outdoors activities for kids.  Local food will be available for purchase.  Agencies, community groups and area merchants will have exhibits on display, and performances by local dance and martial arts groups will provide entertainment for all ages.

Workshops and panels include:

  • Beekeeping
  • Basic sewing
  • Bicycle maintenance and repair
  • Raising backyard chickens
  • Jam-making and canning basics
  • Urban gardening
  • Elder wisdom and perspectives on the Depression
  • Self-help in a tough economy
  • Homemade cleaning products
  • Rain barrels
  • Emergency response kits
  • Energy efficiency for homeowners
  • Perennial vegetables;

 

“We are excited to be working with all these other organizations to build our future happiness here in Snohomish County.  It’s really up to each of us to build the future we want, starting with getting off of carbon-based fuel and going on through local food to better local health for everyone,”  said Dean Smith of Transition Port Gardner.

This event is co-sponsored by Transition Port Gardner, Sno-Isle Food Co-op, Washington Department of Ecology, and People For Puget Sound.
